Garrett and Guth in their "Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933". Q. David Bowers in his "Official Red Book - A guide Book of Gold Dollars" states, "The 1858-S is scarce in any grade and is a rarity in Mint State. Most are well struck and have nice eye appeal."
