There is another chip, but pretty insignificant, very small and very shallow....and basically, really not very noticeable, on outer perimeter at 2 o'clock (see pics 6 & 7).....otherwise a super, nice dark transfer, of this CLASSIC antique, BG image lid!! The base section is a match-up from my supply of spares and is a good mach up with only a little bit of "play" between base and lid. Quite adequate for display. Please check out all the pics, and if you have any questions, please ask them prior to committing to buy. Thanks.

    Description

    On offer is this
    antique, ceramic, (
    dates to ca 1870
    ) underglaze-transferred,
    ORIGINAL and genuine
, RUSSIAN BEAR'S GREASE jar, or "pot lid" as they are more commonly referred to
. The diameter of the lid measures about 3 1/2" and the complete pot with lid in place stands 1 3/4" high.  The transfer pictorial on this particular example is
    nice and DARK
    !
Just a super "pot lid" collectible which would be a scarce and handsome piece in any collection,  or even a collectible for those interested in Bear-related ephemera!
For any viewers who may not know what Bears grease was used for
:  In the Victorian era, it was believed that the grease from a bear carcass could stimulate hair growth and help prevent baldness. The idea being, that the dense fur of the bear would somehow be translated to stimulate hair growth in humans, when the grease was applied to the human cranium!!!
Back in the day, the grease was scraped off the fatty parts of the bear skin & carcass and mixed with various perfumes to make it more appealing. It was then marketed in these small lidded pots (and used extensively) as a men’s hair cosmetic.
