Antique,(ca 1880-90) ceramic, multi-colored PRATTWARE Bears Grease jar pot lid

$ 20.03

Availability: 47 in stock
  • Time Period Manufactured: Antique (Pre-1900)
  • Country/Region of Manufacture: United Kingdom
  • Condition: The lid face is in good condition. Underneath the lid are just a few shallow-ish flakes on flip-side and one on side flange, which really don't amount to much. The base is matched with this lid from my supply of spares and is from about the same time period. The base is a reasonable fit, but the hue of the "white" is brighter than the white of the lid....and the base has a few scrapes and nibbles on the edges. Even though the base is not the best match, it still serves to raise the lid and is better to have it, in order to display the lid. Please check out all the pics, and if you have any questions, please ask them prior to committing to buy. Thanks.

    For any viewers who may not know what Bears grease was used for
    :  In the Victorian era, it was believed that the grease from a bear carcass could stimulate hair growth and help prevent baldness. The idea being, that the dense fur of the bear would somehow be translated to stimulate hair growth in humans, when the grease was applied to the human cranium!!!
    Back in the day, the grease was scraped off the fatty parts of the bear skin & carcass and mixed with various perfumes to make it more appealing. It was then marketed in these small lidded pots (and used extensively) as a men’s cosmetic.
    FOR VIEWERS WHO MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THESE DELIGHTFUL LITTLE LIDDED JARS....THEY WERE USED BETWEEN APPROX. 1840-1920 TO MARKET VARIOUS PRODUCTS WHICH CAME IN A PASTE FORM. AFTER WWI THEY BECAME OBSOLETE AS MORE MODERN AND ECONOMICAL FORMS OF PACKAGING REPLACED THEM.   THE RECOVERY AND COLLECTING OF THESE OLD PIECES HAS BECOME A POPULAR, WORLD-WIDE HOBBY, AND A QUAINT REMINDER OF A BYGONE ERA.         BE ASSURED, YOU ARE BIDDING ON A GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC PERIOD PIECE.
