    Description

The Maricopas live next to and often marry their Pima neighbors and consequently their basketry is often confused. The earlier Maricopa baskets often used a vegetal red dye that quickly faded to a warm reddish brown hue. The early Pima baskets did not use red dyes . Both used a round start usually devil's claw and both used a whip stitch and sometimes herringbone rim. The Pima's weave was generally a bit tighter unless they were making a "gap stitch" for the tourist trade. Made of willow, dyed willow, and devil's claw on a bear grass coiled foundation. Nice clean and nice one to find with the color still in good condition. Looks to be c.1920s. Suitable for any collection from growing through investment grade, it has NO RESERVE !
