RARE GERALDINE WALKINGSTICK (1939-2017) TRICOLOR RIVERCANE QUIVER, 1ST PLACE, MINT!
An incredibly beautiful and exceptionally rare rivercane basketry form that won First Prize ribbon in 2015 - it can be verified via internet.  Geraldine Walkingstick was really the last of the top echelon of master Cherokee rivercane basket weavers in the same class with Eva Wolfe and Rowena Bradley of the latter part of the 20th Century.
This piece is a culmination of everything we collectors seek in a great Cherokee basket - artistry, rarity, color and condition.  That it was created toward the end of Geraldine’s magnificent career makes complete sense.
In 2015, her basketry entries won First Place in 3 categories!  This quiver utilizes 3 distinct designs with 3 color combinations - possibly 4 as I see a butternut dye at the top.  One sees the CHIEF’S HEART, and variations of CHIEF’S DAUGHTER AND ARROW/FISHBONE alternating throughout.  This elegant basket hangs from its soft tanned deer hide strap which is woven into the quiver.
It is signed and dated on the bottom and comes with the First Place ribbon that was presented to her. Obviously this was sold immediately after its making and exhibition in North Carolina and never got through the door at Qualla Arts.  Consequently, there is no Qualla tag that accompanies the basket.  Though, if I’m not mistaken, the Cherokee event that handed out the ribbons was a Qualla Arts event, so there’s that!
Made with rivercane dyed with walnut, bloodroot and possibly butternut vegetal dyes.  The quiver form is undoubtedly the rarest type one sees in all of Cherokee basketry.  Though rare themselves, rivercane mats aren’t even a close second.  Measures approximately 4” x 20.5”.  Condition is second to none.  Provenance is my personal collection to the new buyer.
