Description

Rare Antique Large Native American Maine Indian Wabanaki Passamaquoddy Splint Ash Lidded Handled Pie Basket.
I have been collecting Maine Wabanaki baskets for years. This very rare, vintage, brown ash, splint pie basket is one of my most prized baskets. In the publication,
Baskets of the Dawnland People,
2008, produced by Joseph A. Nicholas,
you can see from the photo of Frances (Neptune) Richards on page 10 making her famous pie basket, that these baskets are historic. The State of Maine contracted them to be made and filled with Maine made products and given to dignitaries back in the day. This pie basket, made by Passamaquoddy William Altvater of Pleasant Point, Maine, is nearly identical to Frances Richards’. Please see the photo of him from
Baskets of the Dawnland People,
page 7, making a scale basket. The original sales tag listing William Altvater as the maker is included. I must downsize so this pie basket, after many years, is now for sale. In all of my years of collecting, this is the only pie basket of its type that I have come across. It will be an important addition to any basket and Native American collection. Please see the photos for condition.
