    Description

USS MARYLAND BB-46 Naval cover for this famous battleship
attacked at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.
Blue photo taken a day after the attack, with the USS Maryland moving
away from Battleship Row, on a cover pictorially postmarked from Lincoln, NE.
dated Feb 28, 2021. Cover franked with a 55 cent USS Missouri stamp #5392.
Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift!
USS Maryland BB-46 was undamaged on December 7, 2011 at Honolulu, Hawaii.
Blue photo printed on cachet #9131 with an actual image of the USS Maryland
on 8 December 1941, by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. This mostly undamaged battleship
was alongside (inside) the torpedoed USS Oklahoma that turned over, trapping members
of the crew. This proud ship, a 624 foot long Colorado Class battleship was built in
Newport News, VA and commissioned in 1921. She served in both the Atlantic and
Pacific during the peacetime 1920s and 30s. This senior battleship was moored in
Battleship Row on 7 December 1941 and was the first to shoot down an enemy torpedo plane.
Her crew activated all their anti-aircraft guns and after the battle sent firefighting crews
to assist sister ships. After repairs and modernization the USS Maryland earned seven
WWII Battle Stars in the Pacific Theater. After the hostilities ended, USS Maryland
transported troops back to America as part of Operation Magic Carpet during five
voyages in 1945 and 1946. The proud battleship was sold for recycling into scrap metal in 1959.
